What These Tools Actually Compute
A staking calculator does arithmetic, not analysis. Give it a price and an estimated probability and it returns a stake; give it the prices in a market and it returns the bookmaker's margin. The arithmetic is trivial and the reason to use a tool is consistency rather than difficulty.
The most useful of them is the simplest: converting odds to implied probability and summing the market. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%, 4.00 implies 25%. Sum every outcome in a market and the total exceeds 100% — that excess is the margin, and it is the bookmaker's expected cut. A market summing to 105% is expensive; one summing to 102% is competitive. Being able to see that number in a few seconds changes which markets are worth betting into at all.
The Kelly Criterion
Kelly answers a specific question: given a probability estimate and a price, what fraction of a bankroll maximises long-term growth? The formula is short and the calculators implementing it are everywhere.
The problem is the input. Kelly requires a probability estimate, and a bettor's estimate is a guess. When the guess is 5% too optimistic — an entirely ordinary error — the recommended stake is not slightly too large but dramatically too large, because the formula is highly sensitive at exactly the point where confidence is highest.
This is why practitioners use fractional Kelly: a quarter or a half of the recommended stake. That does not fix the estimate, but it makes the consequence of a bad one survivable. Full Kelly on estimates derived from judgement rather than a validated model is a route to ruin that arrives faster than most people expect.
Level Versus Percentage Staking
The comparison these tools make clear is worth internalising.
Level staking risks the same absolute amount every bet. It is simple, transparent, and makes results easy to interpret because a profit figure in units is directly comparable across periods.
Percentage staking risks the same proportion of a current bankroll, so stakes shrink during a drawdown and grow during a run. It cannot bust an account outright and it recovers more slowly.
Neither is superior in the abstract. Level staking is easier to evaluate honestly, which for most bettors matters more than the theoretical growth advantage of proportional sizing.
The False Precision Trap
The risk in this category of tool is that it dresses a guess in decimal places. A calculator returning a stake of $34.71 conveys a confidence that the underlying 57% probability estimate does not support.
The output is worth exactly as much as the input, and the input is usually a judgement. Rounding aggressively and treating the result as an order of magnitude rather than a figure is the correct way to use these tools.
Verdict
The margin calculator is genuinely valuable and takes seconds to use. The Kelly calculator is valuable only alongside an honest assessment of how reliable the probability estimate is, and dangerous without one.
Neither improves the selections. They improve the sizing of selections already made, which is a smaller but real contribution.
